Get to Know : Kyrsten Schaefer, DSI Intern

How long have you been volunteering at DSI?

I started volunteering at DSI in January 2022!

What do you love about volunteering?

I love volunteering because it is an amazing way for me to help certain aspects within my community. The fulfillment and joy that I receive from just helping people, is astounding. Dedicating my time to volunteering helps me grow as a person, learn new things, and expand my social skills!

Tell us about yourself?

I am 20 years old, and I am currently attending Ivy Tech to obtain my associates degree in Human Services! I have always had a passion for helping people, no matter who they are. That is why I felt as if, Human Services and Social Work was the path for me to take! My life looks a lot like school, work, sleep, and repeat! In my free time, I love to workout at my CrossFit gym. Staying active is one of my priorities. I also enjoy hanging out with my family and my friends every chance that I get. I am a vocalist as well! Whenever possible, I make sure to practice singing, it is one of my many passions. One more thing I must include is my dog, Wanda. She is a two-year old red heeler and pointer mix. Ever since I adopted her, she has become my best friend. Dogs are probably my favorite animal but if I am being honest, I am a huge animal lover in general!

What are your future plans?

I love this question; my future always excites me every time I think about it! As I stated in the previous question, I am obtaining my associates right now. Once I am finished with that, I will be moving to IUPUI to obtain my bachelor’s in social work with a specialty in addiction studies. After obtaining my bachelor’s degree, I will continue my education to obtain my master’s degree! My main occupational goal is to be a substance abuse therapist. If there is one social cause that I am extremely passionate about, it is addiction. Another big and fun future of mine is to have a house on many acres of land. As I mentioned, I love animals. If I could provide a good home for animals, especially farm animals. I would love to be able to do that! So many goals, dreams, and plans. I am very excited to push myself past my greatest expectations!

Do you have a connection to Down syndrome?

I do not have any personal connection to Down Syndrome. However, all throughout high school I was a peer tutor to all of the special education students! My mom majored in Special Education and wanted to be a special education teacher for the longest time, that was one of her biggest passions. Unfortunately, she never got to it. Being a peer tutor in high school and volunteering for DSI makes me happy because I get to help so many people and I get to share a passion with my mom who is no longer here to experience it herself!
