Volunteer Spotlight: Gisselle Reyes

What do you love about volunteering?

There are many things I love about volunteering at DSI. So far, I have made new friends and contacts, I love being part of a wonderful team here at DSI. I’ve certainly increased my social skills and my practical skills. This place gives me a sense of fulfilment and achievement when I finish a task I am assigned or when I help someone with something they need.

Tell us about yourself?

My name is Gisselle Reyes, I am 20 years old and I love helping people! I like being involved in many things. I also like to meet new people. I am currently an Ivy Tech student. It is my second and last year at Ivy Tech Community College, if everything goes as planned, I will be graduating in May 2020. I will earn my Associates of Human Services. After graduating from Ivy Tech, I will transfer to IUPUI as a junior and hopefully get accepted into the school of Social Work.

What are your future plans?

My future plan is to graduate from IUPUI and earn my Bachelor of Social Work. After finishing school, I hope to obtain an opportunity to work in a school base, preferably at an elementary school. I want to help by providing counseling and helping students and provide them and their parents with resources they might need. I want to ensure that students always have a good social well-being. Overall, I just want to help individuals, families, and the community! I know my chosen career will be challenging but it can also be very rewarding! I believe my career will be rewarding by helping people and teaching them some coping skills that can improve their lives and well-being.

Do you have a connection to Down syndrome?

I don’t have a connection to Down Syndrome, however, thanks to DSI I became more aware about Down Syndrome and learned more about individuals with down syndrome. Now I am spreading my knowledge and information I’ve learned about down syndrome to my family and friends!
